Giraffe bone handles have become a very popular handle material in recent years. Our Giraffe bone comes from wildlife preserves in South Africa and surrounding regions. The bone is taken as animals pass from natural causes as no animals were harmed to procure this material. Consequently, there is but a limited number of Giraffe leg bones available each year. The striations in the bone are what make it desirable and to resemble Mammoth Ivory. We stabilize and color the bone at the same time which makes it much easier to match pieces and make pairs. Giraffe bone is very dense and colors will vary from pair to pair depending on the density and striations of the bone.
Giraffe bone is unique in many different aspects. The first being the fact that it can be cut into tiles that are significantly larger than most animal bones. The second is that it has tiny hairline fractures due to the rapid growth of the giraffe's legs. This second aspect is why giraffe bone is so beautiful when colored and why all giraffe bone requires stabilization. All of our giraffe bone is both colored and stabilized in the same process. This also makes each individual piece different due to the density of the bone, amount of hairline fractures and the color being applied. All of our pairs are carefully matched to resemble one another.
